Planning pipe procurement for a construction project

Most site delays on piping are procurement problems, not installation problems. A short guide to sequencing the order so the trench never waits.

Split the requirement into packages

Piping on a building project rarely arrives as one order. It is easier to control as three packages: external water supply, internal plumbing, and buried drainage with chambers. Each has a different material, a different standard and a different point in the programme.

  • External supply: UPVC to IS 4985 or HDPE to IS 4984
  • Internal plumbing: CPVC to IS 15778 for hot and cold, UPVC SWR to IS 13592 for soil and waste
  • Buried drainage: DWC to IS 16098 Part 2 with matched chambers and covers

Count the fittings properly

Fittings, not pipe, are what usually stop a crew. Take the bends, tees, reducers, couplers and solvent cement off the drawing rather than estimating from the pipe quantity, and add the transitions where materials change — for example brass-insert CPVC fittings at every threaded outlet.

Match the chamber to the location

Inspection and manhole chambers need the cover load class chosen by where they sit: pedestrian areas, light vehicle areas and road carriageway are all different. This is decided at drawing stage, because retrofitting a heavier cover after paving is expensive.

Give the supplier a complete brief

A single message containing product type, diameter, class or ring stiffness, quantity, jointing method and delivery window will get a usable answer far faster than a general request. If any item is time-critical, say so — availability of specific sizes and classes varies, and knowing early lets the sequence be adjusted.
