Two numbers, two meanings
HDPE pipes to IS 4984 carry a material grade (PE 63, PE 80 or PE 100) and a pressure rating (PN). The grade describes the long term strength of the polymer; the PN describes the working pressure the finished pipe is rated for at 27 °C.
A higher grade material reaches the same PN with a thinner wall, which is why PE 100 has largely displaced PE 63 on new water networks.
Where HDPE is preferred
HDPE is supplied in coils in smaller diameters and in straight lengths in larger ones, so long buried runs can be laid with very few joints. It tolerates ground movement, resists corrosion and is commonly used for water distribution, bore connections, industrial lines and buried utilities.
Jointing decides the fittings list
Butt fusion joins two pipe ends directly and needs matching wall thickness. Electrofusion uses a fitting with an embedded coil and suits repairs and tight spaces. Compression fittings are quick but are generally limited to smaller diameters and lower pressures.
Decide the jointing method before ordering, because it changes the fittings, the tooling and often the pipe length format.
