ISI-Marked Pipes in Chennai: What to Check Before You Buy

The marking moulded on a pipe tells you more than the shop label. Know what to look for before you order.

Marked UPVC pipes ready for inspection at Asha Enterprises, Chennai

Chennai buyers often ask for "ISI pipes". What actually protects your job is the specification printed or moulded on the pipe: the Indian Standard it is made to, the size, the pressure class or duty grade, and the manufacturer's identification. This page explains what to check, whichever supplier you buy from.

What the marking tells you

A pressure pipe made to IS 4985, for example, carries the standard, nominal size, pressure class and manufacturer details. SWR drainage pipes follow IS 13592 and are graded Type A or Type B; borewell casing follows IS 12818 with a casing class. Matching the marking to the application matters more than the word 'ISI'.

Match the standard to the job

Potable water supply lines, drainage, casing and conduit each follow different standards. Share the drawing or the marking from an existing pipe, and the requirement can be matched to the correct product family.

Frequently asked questions

Do all pipes carry an ISI mark?

No. Certification requirements vary by product type and manufacturer. Check the standard, size and class moulded or printed on the pipe itself and confirm the specification with the supplier.

Can you confirm the standard before I collect?

Yes. Tell us the standard, size and class your job specifies and we confirm the matching product for that enquiry. Availability is confirmed per enquiry.

Is a higher pressure class always better?

Not necessarily. The class should match the design requirement; over-specifying raises cost and can complicate fittings compatibility.
